Advising Services
The Advising and Counseling Office offers and staff can provide assistance with the following advising-related topics:
  • General Education & Graduation Requirements (GE/GR)
  • Lower division major/pre-major advising
  • Questions about ECS Advising Center Hold
  • Course planning via Smart Planner
  • Interpretation of University academic policies
  • Referrals to other campus resources.
  • Assist with transferring from Community Colleges and attending Summer Semester. 
Advising Appointments

Drop-in Advising

We offer 15-minute walk-in advising sessions for students that have quick questions or need follow-up services from a recent appointment, including:

  • Follow-up from a recent, prior appointment (with the same advisor).
  • Interpretation of University academic policies.
  • Referrals to other campus resources.
  • Questions regarding "" (transferring courses from a community college)
  • Questions regarding summer school at CSUS and/or community colleges.
  • Career-related questions for ECS Faculty Fellows or the Internship and Career Center (ICS).

Scheduled Appointments

The 30-minute sit-down appointments are for students that have mandatory appointments with an advisor or need to see an advisor for the following services. Students should use EAB to schedule appointments, please see How to Make an Appointment at the bottom of the page. 

Appointment services:

  • Responding to an email or call from an advisor.
  • General Education or Graduation Requirement Academic Advising.
  • Course planning using Smart Planner.
  • Keys to Degree: Smart Planner, Sac State Scheduler, Academic Requirements.
  • Questions on academic standing (repeats, grade forgiveness, academic progress).
  • Undergraduate graduation checks.
  • Resource and information for students on Academic Probation.
  • Basic Readmission/Reinstatement questions.

Mandator Advising

First Year Freshmen

All first year freshmen must attend a Mandatory Advising Appointment or Advising Workshop. Students will receive an advising hold in the Sprding during the 7th week of classes. The hold will prevent students from registering for classes for the following semester. Students will receive an email with information regarding how to register for a workshop or an advising appointment.

Spring 2019 Transfers:

All new ECS transfer students must attend a Mandatory Transfer Advising session or workshop during their first semester at CSUS. Students will receive an advising hold during the 7th week of classes. The hold will prevent students from registering for classes for the following semester. Students will receive an email with information regarding how to register for a workshop.


Continuing Students

Continuing students (not in their first semester/year) at CSUS should meet with a faculty member at least once per year. Please confirm with your specific major department’s advising requirements. Meeting with your faculty advisor is recommended in order to stay on track with major and degree-completion requirements.


Counseling Services

Dr. Brian Yu's mission is to support and enhance student psychological wellbeing and academic achievement by providing both Performance Restoration and Performance Enhancement services. 

Performance Restoration refers to when students experience mental health difficulties and deficits in academic, social, and emotional functioning.  The goal of services is to get students back to their previous levels of functioning.  Some examples of presenting concerns related to Performance Restoration include the following:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Eating Disorders
  • Body Image Concerns
  • Trauma
  • Grief/Loss
  • Relationship Difficulties
  • Transitions/Adjustment
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Addiction
  • Cultural difficulties
  • Experiences of Discrimination
  • Sexual and/or Gender Identity concerns

Performance Enhancement refers to when a student is already functioning well but wants to continue to improve psychological skills to elevate academic performance and social-emotional functioning.  The focus is on enhancing students’ strengths and developing mastery of their mental skills.  Such examples of Performance Enhancement may include the following:

  • Confidence
  • Motivation
  • Concentration
  • Communication
  • Discipline
  • Goal-Setting
  • Maintaining Consistent Performance
  • Habit Formation
  • Resilience
  • Performing Under Pressure

I am available by appointment to provide individual counseling and group workshops.  To schedule an appointment, please send a brief email to that includes what service you're interested in and days/times you are available throughout the week.  Please, keep in mind that email is not a secure form of communication, so be careful and discrete of personal information you are providing over email.

Crisis Counseling:  For urgent concerns, urgent mental health care services are available on a drop-in basis at the Urgent Care Clinic on the first floor of The Well, Monday through Thursday, 9am-6pm, and Friday 9am-5pm.  During after hours, call 916-278-6461 and follow the prompts to speak to someone.  For life-threatening emergencies, please call 911 or visit your closest hospital emergency department.

How to Make an Appointment


  • Before scheduling your 30-minute appointment with ECS Advising, Counseling, and Tutoring Office, please make sure that you meet the appointment vs drop in parameters.
  • Select "Advising" from the drop-down menu. Then select "Engineering & Computer Science Student Success Center". The next drop-down menu includes a list of services the ECS Advising, Counseling, and Tutoring Office offers. Please select the required service. Click on "Next" and on the next page will list the days and times available. 
  • Since advising sessions are scheduled for 30-minute intervals, we recommend you review your plan in your My Sac State prior to your appointment.
  • Bring your CSUS ID card and arrive before your appointment time.
  • Your appointment may be canceled if you're 10 minutes late.
  • If you can't keep an appointment, cancel the appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
  • If you have difficulty making an appointment, stop by the ACT Office front desk and someone will assist you.
